Privacy Policy

Didion is a voice-first notes app made by Aman Nigam. This policy explains exactly what happens to what you write and say. It is written to be checked against the app's behaviour, not to cover us with vagueness.

Where your notes live

Your notes are stored on your device. They are not uploaded to us, we run no server that stores them, and we cannot read them. The one time a note's text leaves your phone is described below, and even then nothing is kept.

If you use Back Up Notes in Settings, the app writes a file to wherever you choose (Files, iCloud Drive, or anywhere else you pick). That file is yours; where it then lives is governed by whatever service you saved it to.

Your voice

This changed in version 1.1. Earlier versions transcribed on the phone only.

When you dictate a note and you have allowed AI processing, the audio is streamed — as you speak — through our relay to the transcription service, which sends the words back. It is not recorded to a file first, and no copy is kept: not by us, not on the relay, and not by the service, which does not use it to train anything.

If you decline, or you are offline, or you have used your monthly minutes, transcription runs on this phone instead, using a speech model the app downloads. Slower, and nothing leaves the device.

We think audio deserves saying plainly: a recording catches the room, and people who never agreed to anything. That is why it is behind the same permission as your notes, why nothing is stored, and why the on-device path still exists.

What is sent off the device, and to whom

If you allow it:

• What is collected: the text of a note.
• How it is collected: the app reads the note you have just written or dictated, at the moment you save it. There is no background collection, and nothing is gathered when the app is not in use.
• Who it is sent to: an AI service — currently Google, through the Gemini API, or Sarvam AI. It reaches them through a relay we operate, described below.
• Every use it is put to, in full: cleaning up dictated text into punctuation and paragraphs, writing a title for the note, and identifying tasks and reminders with their dates. It is used for nothing else — not for advertising, profiling, or training our own systems.
• How long we keep it: we do not keep it. The text passes through our relay and is gone the moment the reply comes back — it is never written to a disk or a database, and no log records what a note says.
• The relay, and why it exists: requests go from your phone to a small service we run on Cloudflare Workers, which forwards them to the AI service. It exists so the key to that service lives on a server we control rather than inside every copy of the app, and so we can check a subscription is active. What it records is one line per request: which kind of task it was ("write a title"), which service answered, how long it took, how many tokens it used, and a one-way hash of your subscription id. Never the note.
• Third-party protections: Google processes these requests under the Gemini API terms, which state that data submitted through the paid API is not used to train their models, and their privacy policy. Sarvam AI processes them under their own privacy policy on equivalent terms. Cloudflare hosts the relay and is bound by its privacy policy; it carries the request but nothing is stored there. We consider these protections equivalent to those described here. We share your data with no one else.
• Only note text is sent — no name, no email, no device identifier, no account, because none exists.
• If you never dictate or type a note, nothing is ever sent.

Reminders

Reminders are local notifications scheduled by your phone. Nothing is sent to us or to any server to make them work.

Subscriptions

Didion is a paid app. Purchases are handled by Apple and processed through RevenueCat, which tells the app whether your subscription is active.

• We never see your card, billing address, or Apple ID.
• RevenueCat assigns a random anonymous identifier for the purchase. It is not linked to your name, your email, or the contents of your notes.

App updates

The app checks for updates using Expo's update service. That check transmits only technical information needed to serve the right update, such as the app version and platform. It does not include your notes.

What we collect about you

Nothing. There are no analytics, no crash-reporting SDK, no advertising identifiers, and no third-party trackers in Didion.

The app does record how many words it has sent to the AI model, so it can show you what the AI features cost. That count is stored on your device and is never uploaded. You can see it, and clear it, in Settings.

Children

Didion is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from them. Since the app collects nothing and requires no account, there is nothing for us to collect or delete.

Deleting your data

Delete a note in the app and it is gone from the device. Delete the app and everything it stored goes with it. Because we store nothing on a server, there is no account to close and no deletion request to make to us.

To cancel a subscription, use your Apple ID settings — Apple manages subscriptions, not us.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data held about you. In Didion's case there is nothing held: your notes are on your device, and the relay described above stores none of them. If you have a question about this, contact us below.

Changes to this policy

If this changes, the date at the top changes with it, and a meaningful change will be noted in the app's release notes.
